Nintendo's missing franchises and their chances of coming to Switch (long read)

“I want X for Switch”, “when is X coming to the Switch”, “X is perfect for the Switch!” How often have you heard or said these sentences? Quite a lot, probably, especially about Nintendo franchises. Nintendo fans really like first-party games, and they’re always asking for their favorites to come back. Problem is, even though Nintendo owns dozens of franchises, there’s only a few that are guaranteed to show up during any given console, so fans of smaller franchises are left wondering when they’ll play them again.
Well, today I’ll try to mostly answer these questions. I’ll take a look at several, Nintendo-owned franchises and try to figure out what are their chances of coming to Switch. I’ll be basing myself on this such as release schedule, success of previous entries, popular demand, market niche and internal interest at Nintendo.
However, keep in mind two things. One: Nintendo owns a shit-ton of IPs, and I won’t cover them all. I’ll focus on the ones that have multiple entries, and even then, I might skip a few if I feel I have no meaningful insight.
And two: No matter what I or anyone else says, the chances for any of these games to come back is NOT ZERO. Nintendo is unpredictable and they’ll sometimes bring something out of the blue when you least expect it. This year alone we saw the return of Brain Age (a franchise not seen since 2012), Clubhouse Games (a sequel to a game from 2005), and Famicom Detective Club, a franchise with two games from 1988/89, which then received a remake in 1998 and then nothing until twenty two years later. Granted, it’s another remake, but it is still a modern installment in a franchise twenty two years dormant. If Famicom Detective Club can come back in 2020, so can your favorite franchise. Now, let’s begin, in alphabetical order:
Art Academy
Starting off with a small one. Art Academy is a series of drawing games that started on the DS in 2010 and then released pretty consistently over the following years, with three entries on 3DS and two (well, one and a half) for the WiiU between 2010 and 2016. Already this feels like a franchise with a pretty consistent release schedule, even though it hasn’t been seen for four years now. I don’t think any of the games were blockbusters, per se, but they also don’t need to be. They’re small games, probably inexpensive to produce that seem to do consistently well enough to get new sequels.
There are several obstacles that present themselves to the release of a new Art Academy, but I think all of them are easily overcome. For starters, AA is the type of casual game that thrived during the DS/Wii eras, a Touch Generations game. Since the Switch released, many have noted that Nintendo may want to distance themselves from that era due to the failure of the WiiU, and there may be some truth to that, but I feel like this is starting to change. Again, this year saw the return of both Brain Age and Clubhouse Games, both casual, Touch Generations DS games. I feel like, at the start of the Switch’s life cycle, Nintendo was indeed trying to focus on core gamers, but now that they have secured that core gamer audience, they may be more comfortable releasing more casual fare.
Furthermore Art Academy is developed by Headstrong Games, a British developer that doesn’t seem to do much other than AA. However, in 2017, that team was absorbed into its parent studio, Kuju Games. This move, which happened the year after the last AA game released, may have something to do with the franchsie’s MIA status. But, Kuju games is still active, having released a game just last year, and I don’t see why they couldn’t take up the mantle.
Finally, some speculated a few years ago that AA was dead due to the Switch not having a stylus but, OH WAIT, Brain Age fixed that too!
All in all, even though Art Academy is hardly a hot franchise, there’s very little standing in the way of its return, and little reason to doubt that it will.
Chances: Good
Chibi-Robo!
We may have started on a positive note, but here comes a downer. Chibi-Robo is probably not coming back anytime soon. This cute little robot debuted in his self-titled Game Cube game, developed by Skip Ltd. Like most games by the developer, it was quirky and fun, and not very popular, but had its fans, and Chibi-Robo must have endeared someone at Nintendo, because he kept showing up here and there. He got two DS sequels, though the second one was Japan-only, already a red flag. In 2013, he starred in a 3DS eshop game that was very different from the main games, more of an experimental spin-off, and was not well-received.
But the real final nail came in 2015, with Chibi-Robo Zip Lash! The game was announced to be a 2D platformer, and many fans identified the change in genre (from a unique adventure game to one of the most over-saturated genres in Nintendo consoles) as a total sell-out, and they were totally correct! The developers basically admitted that they did it to try and get more players (red flag). Series producer Kensuke Tanabe then said that if the game didn’t sell well, it could be the end of the franchise (RED FLAG). And then, the unfortunate but inevitable happened. Zip Lash was a critical and commercial bomb, and neither the developer nor the franchise has been seen again. Aside from the inevitable Smash Bros mentions, Chibi-Robo has only been seen on that infamous flaming tweet from 2018 (I told you someone at Nintendo really likes them). To make matters worse, there are increasing signs that Skip Ltd may be going under
So, a struggling franchise makes a desperate move to gain fans, a developer expresses concerns for its future if the game bombs, said game bombs and now the developer may be going out of business? It seems the writing is on the wall.
Now, even if Skip goes under, that is not necessarily the end of Chibi. Nintendo would still retain the rights, as they did for Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk after developer Cing went under. As for whether or not Nintendo would want to give the franchise a second (third? Fourth?) chance, it doesn’t look good
Chances: Very bad
Custom Robo
From one diminutive robot to another, the Custom Robo series is and robo-battle series that began on the N64. It was Japan only, as was its N64 and GBA sequels. Afterwards, Nintendo did try to expand it, releasing a GameCube game in NA, and a DS game in NA and Europe. However, despite the fact that players of these games will attest to how good these games are, they didn’t seem to do very well, and the franchise has not been seen since 2007.
There was one statement of internal interest, when a developer in 2014 said that he heard demands both inside and outside the company for a new entry, but that there were no plans for one, and he was unsure when there would be. Six years on, it seems there still aren’t. In fact, the developer itself, Noise, is also strangely MIA. Though they are officially still active, with their website being updated for 2020, they have not worked on a game since 2015.
Then, in 2018, many fans watched in horror the news that Nintendo let the trademark expire. Some have pointed out that this isn’t as bad as it seems, as it refers specifically to games on optical discs, which Nintendo doesn’t make anymore, but I don’t know enough about the subject to say for certain. Regardless, it’s evident that Nintendo still owns the franchise, as Custom Robo content appears in Smash Ultimate.
On the other hand, one of the series creators, Kohji Kendoh, is still thinking about it. He is working for another developer, and released a suspiciously similar game called Synaptic Drive just this year, as well as talking about Custom Robo in social media. It seems like a Mighty no9/ Yooka-Laylee/Bloodstained situation, in which the owner of an Ip is not using it, so the creator releases a spiritual successor.
Bottom line, there seems to be demand for Custom Robo. A developer saw it six years ago, and the creator is seeing it now. Whether or not thinks this demand is enough to revive the franchise, is tough to say, but doesn’t look great.
Not as bad as Chibi-Robo, though
Chances: Bad
Daigasso! Band Brothers
Here’s a franchise Americans never got. Daigasso! Band Brother is a rhythm game released for the DS in 2004 and stars Barbara the Bat, who has an uncharacteristically risqué design for Nintendo. The game was Japan-only but seems to have been successful, it received a sequel in 2009 (released in Europe, but not NA), and another in 2013 for the 3DS. Despite not having received new games since then, the series is far from inactive. Barbara the Bat in particular, like Chibi-Robo, seems to have fans inside Nintendo because she pops up everywhere. She had cameos in a few other DS games, she was an AT in Brawl and a spirit in Ultimate, she was a costume in Mario Maker, she appeared in a comic strip with WarioWare’s Ashley, and the series has a Twitter account that was super active all the way up to April of this year (more on that later). In 2017, that account even tweeted a comic strip of Barbara demanding a Switch. That was probably not a tease of anything, as it’s been 3 years and nothing, but stuff has happened with the franchise even more recently.
Last year, in 2019, six years after the release of the 3DS game, there were 30 songs added to the game in celebration of the series 15th anniversary. So as late as last year, Nintendo was celebrating this franchise with an in-game event. Now, the servers for the game were shut down earlier this year (hence the end of the Twitter account), and the game was removed from the eshop (as it is basically pointless without the servers), but with recent news that the 3DS has ceased production, it’s pretty clear that the game’s end is a consequence of the 3DS’ end, and not a lack of players. So if the series is alive, but can’t be on the 3DS, it has to go somewhere, no? Bottom line: the games are successful, the series is active, and the character is popular. I don’t know if Barbara the Bat’s next tour will be an international one, but I’m confident it will happen
Chances: Very Good
Dillon’s Rolling Western
DRW is a unique western-themed tower defense game released on the 3DS eshop in 2012. It received mixed reviews, but had a dedicated fanbase, and was successful enough to spawn two sequels, one in 2013, and a post-apocalyptic themed one in 2018. With a game having released just two years ago, its reasonable to say the series is not dormant, so the prospect of a new game is always likely. The developer, Vanpool, who mostly works on smaller scale stuff like this, is both still active and still working at Nintendo.
So, really the only reason to believe the series wouldn’t continue would be if the latest game bombed really hard. It’s hard to say that it did, as sales figures are unavailable, but it was a 3DS game in 2018, probably didn’t set the charts on fire. But then again, unless Nintendo had some really unrealistically high expectations, I don’t think it could have bombed hard enough to kill the franchise that fast.
There’s not much more to say. There aren’t any rumblings of a return, but also no reason to be pessimistic.
Chance: Above Average
Earthbound
Let’s make one thing perfectly clear: There will not be a Mother 4
The Creator of the series, Shigesato Itoi, has said that he would not work on a fourth installment, as he feels the story is complete. Now, normally, Nintendo could just say “screw creative integrity, let’s make a fourth game anyway!” but Shigesato Itoi directly co-owns the series’ copyright so they actually can’t. So unless Itoi changes his mind, or he dies and Nintendo decides to ignore his wishes (neither scenario is completely outside the realm of possibility), Mother 4 is not happening.
So, if new Mother content is made, it’d be either a remake, or Mother 3 localization. We all know demand for this last one is overwhelming, Nintendo themselves have acknowledged it multiple times, but it still hasn’t happened, and it doesn’t seem things have changed. A remake is possible, but don’t hold your breath for it.
Despite the series’ popularity, I think all we’ll see of it is the first two games in NSO.
Chances: Bad
Excitebike
This is a hard one to pinpoint. Excitebike is one of those classic NES games that Nintendo likes to reference all the time, like Ice Climber, Balloon Fight, Wrecking Crew and Duck Hunt. Unlike those, Excitebike actually received sequels and established a franchised. There was a great entry on the N64 and three entries on the Wii, but nothing more since. I can’t imagine the Wii entries were super successful, and there really hasn’t been any word from Nintendo about any interest in reviving the series, either from developers, or the fans. The developer of the Wii games, Monster Games, is still active, and still makes racing games and extreme sports games, but hasn’t worked with Nintendo in 5 years.
Now, one point I see often, and that I’d like to address, is the idea that Nintendo doesn’t want multiple games from the same genre on the same console. I can’t agree. With the exception of the WiiU, every Nintendo home console since the SNES has had multiple Nintendo-published racing games released for it. WiiU didn’t but that console is an exception to many norms. I don’t see why Mario Kart, behemoth that it is, would stop any other racing game from being made, especially when they are so very different (although the fact that MK8 has an Excitebike track doesn’t inspire confidence).
No, I don’t think Mario Kart is the problem, I think is just lack of interest. And though Excitebike is not a franchise Nintendo will ever truly forget, it’s not really revving up for a comeback either. It could happen, it could not
Chances: Medium
Fatal Frame
This horror franchise wasn’t originally a Nintendo product, being released on the PS2 by Tecmo. However, since the fourth game, each title in the series has been published and copyrighted by Nintendo, and this seemingly applies to all future entries, as the series producer said the series’ future is up to Nintendo. So, how does that future look like?
Well, the last game in the series, Maiden of Black Water, was a WiiU game, which means it didn’t sell well, but not as badly as you might think. From all I could find, which is admittedly not much, sales for the game seemed to be only slightly less than previous entries, a gap more than explainable by its console. So, if the series was getting sequels before, the WiiU game’s sales wouldn’t be the reason why there wouldn’t be more. And though Nintendo of America has had to take baby steps into accepting the franchise overseas, Nintendo of Japan seemed satisfied with it, releasing four games between 2008 and 2014.
So sales aren’t an evident problem, what about the developer? That developer is Tecmo Koei, who is not only active and buddies with Nintendo, their current project is none other than Nintendo’s big holiday title. There’s obvious trust there. As for interest, there is a lot. From Koei Tecmo calling it a valuable IP, to the series producer stating multiple times, including this year, that he’d like to bring it to the Switch
Now, this comment pretty much confirms that a new Fatal Frame is not in development as of now, but it has a chance of happening. And remember, the last game is on WiiU, and if we know anything about those, is that they like to come to Switch. And though I don’t see Nintendo breaking their necks to make a new entry, I don’t think they’d oppose it if Tecmo pitches it to them, especially if it’s just a port.
Chances: Good
Fossil Fighters
This game is not Pokémon, or so its fans tell me. Fossil Fighters is a DS game from 2008 where you collect various species of dinosaur and battle with other ~Dinosaur Trainers~ Fossil Fighters in RPG battles. It didn’t receive great reviews, but was successful enough to get a sequel two years later, and another one on the 3DS in 2014. Three games in six years is a pretty good release schedule, and things were looking alright, until that 3DS game came. It was primarily developed by a different studio, and it showed. The game received abysmal reviews, and fan reception was similar. Sales weren’t awful, but not great either.
Since then, the series has been completely quiet. The developer, Red Entertainment, is still active, but hasn’t worked with Nintendo since the 3DS game. As for interest, there hasn’t been a peep from Nintendo about this series at all. No interviews describing vague interest in bringing it bad, no acknowledgment of fan demand, no cameos in other games (aside from Smash, which doesn’t count, Smash has everything). Even fan demand doesn’t seem too high, most of what I’ve seen is a Change.org petition which has been up for a year and has not reached its 2500 signatures goal.
It looks like this series could become a fossil itself. Someday some might dig it up and revive it to use in battle, but I’m not feeling it.
Still not as bad as Chibi-Robo
Chances: Bad
F-Zero
This is the reason you’re reading this.
Oh, F-Zero. If fan demand alone was the deciding factor, F-Zero would be top priority. People want F-Zero, people beg for F-zero, people who have never played, beg for F-Zero. And Nintendo knows this, they’ve acknowledged it. They themselves haven’t forgotten it. Even putting Smash aside, there was an F-Zero minigame in Nintendo Land. There are F-Zero tracks in Mario Kart. They’ve done everything but make a new F-Zero game, but why the hell not?
Well, it’s important to understand that the F-Zero series declined in sales throughout its life. The best-selling game is still the first, and though the following games were fantastic, they sold less and less, and yet, strangely enough, between 2003-2004, Nintendo released THREE F-Zero games. Around the same time, they also released an anime. There are several great articles and videos about what happened to F-Zero, but the best point I’ve seen is that Nintendo tried, in 2003, to really push F-Zero, but it didn’t work. So, with their attempt failed, they let the series sleep, and just never woke it up, even as fan demand increased.
In 2015, Miyamoto commented on the series, and said that, though he heard the demand, he was unsure on what to do with the series, on how to make a new game. Many fans scoffed and said he’d just need to make a modern F-Zero and that’d be great, but I think internal concern runs deeper. Just doing F-Zero failed in 2003, so why would it work now?
That said, I think there is hope. Fan demand is powerful, and more and more we see a new generation of Nintendo developers pushing the company forward. These younger developers are the ones behind new IP like Splatoon and ARMS, and great reinventions of existing ones like Odyssey and BotW. It’s possible that these same younger developers could hear the fan demand, and want to take on the series without the hesitation of their older peers.
It’s been 16 years, but Kid Icarus was gone for 19, wasn’t it?
Stranger things have happened
Chances: I want to believe
Golden Sun
And here’s the other one.
Few Nintendo fans are as vocal and dedicated to their dormant franchise as Golden Sun games. For those who don’t know, Golden Sun was a couple of excellent GBA RPGs released in 2001 and 2002, with a DS sequel in 2010. Such erratic release schedule would make predicting the series’ future difficult at the best of times, but the DS game was seen as a disappointment by many fans and sales were unimpressive. With ten years having passed with no new game, is the series done for? Well, let’s look at it.
In 2012, one of the developers gave an interview in which he straight up said that, if there was fan demand for it, there would “naturally” be a fourth game. We know that developer interview doesn’t immediately guarantee a sequel, but this is also a much more positive statement than Custom Robo and F-Zero’s “We know there’s demand, but we don’t know what to do with it”. This is “If there’s demand, it will happen.” So, is there demand?
You bet your ass there is. And it feels like it is growing. There was a high-profile hoax about a fourth game in 2017 (a similar hoax happened some time before the third game, by the way). The series received notably more content in Smash Ultimate than series of similar standing (quite possibly an acknowledgment of its popularity). And last year, Cory Balrog, director of 2018’s GOTY God of War, tweeted about all the franchises he would trade for a new Golden Sun. Nintendo could hardly have asked for a higher profile endorsement within the industry.
So if fan demand is there, why hasn’t it happened yet? Well, it helps to look at the development history of the series. The first game took eighteen months to develop, considered a long time for a handheld game at the time. And though the eight years between the GBA and DS games may have you believe it took a long time to greenlight a sequel, that’s not the case. Signs point to internal discussion about a sequel to the GBA games as early as 2002, with developers quoted as saying that Nintendo was asking them to make a new one. One of the series producers also said that the series takes a long time to make because of its complexity. After the DS game failed to meet expectations, its understandable that Nintendo may not have been as enthusiastic for a new game as it was before, but it seems like, even if the series is alive and well, the long hiatus would not be uncharacteristic. In that same interview quoted before, the developer even said that a new game would take a long time. In fact, if GS4 had started development shortly after that interview, if it took as long as Dark Dawn, the game would be wrapping up production around now.
Then there’s the developer, Camelot. Aside from Golden Sun, they pretty much only make Mario Tennis and Mario Golf. They release schedule is also super consistent, with a new game every other year, sometimes every year. We already got a Mario Tennis on Switch two years ago so, if not for COVID, their new game would probably have released this year. All things point, then, for the next Camelot game to hit the Switch next year. Smart money would be in Mario Golf, but maybe it is finally Golden Sun.
Finally, I don’t think, as others do, that Xenoblade is the reason GS is not happening. Again, I don’t see evidence to support the idea that Nintendo doesn’t want to publish more than one game in the same genre. Both the GBA and DS had more than a dozen Nintendo-published RPGs, and the Wii and 3DS got RPGs even after Xenoblade released for them. I don’t see why Xenoblade would stop a Switch Golden Sun, especially when they are very different kinds of RPGs. GS is actually closer to Octopath Traveler, whose success was enough to impress SE, why wouldn’t Nintendo want a piece?
Really, I think the biggest obstacle is that Nintendo might want to prioritize the safe investment of Mario sports games over Golden Sun, but the more I research, the more I feel like GS’s chances are higher now than they were at any point in the last ten years.
I feel there’s hope this sun will rise again
Chances: Above average
Kid Icarus
Sorry to keep you waiting.
Kid Icarus was an OK NES game that had a forgotten Game Boy sequel and then nobody cared about it for 19 years until it was unexpectedly revived for the 3DS in 2012. This story is a testament to the fact that, just because its been a long time, it doesn’t mean it will never happen. But in order to know if it will happen again, let’s understand how it happened in the first place.
It’s important to mention that reviving Kid Icarus was not the intent behind KI: Uprising, it was the idea of its director, Masahiro Sakurai. Nintendo had given him a project and Sakurai decided to use an established franchise for it. He briefly considered Star Fox, but decided to use Kid Icarus, for which he probably had a soft spot, considering he had added Pit to Brawl some years earlier. So, there wasn’t an exec at Nintendo who woke up one day and decided to bring Kid Icarus back, they gave the director a project, and, after some deliberation, he decided to use Kid Icarus for it.
That director is currently busy developing Smash Bros DLC, but even after that’s over, he probably won’t revisit Kid Icarus. He has shot down the idea of him working on a sequel or a port. His words were: "For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years." Yikes. That’s pretty damning. Sure, Nintendo could get someone else to make the game, but if it was only Sakurai that was interested in the series in the first place, what is the hope of that?
Well, that statement is not super accurate. Before Uprising, there was actually a Kid Icarus reboot in development for the Wii. It was cancelled, and thank God for it, as it was an awfully stupid gritty reboot, but it showed that there was interest in the franchise even before Uprising. Naturally, you’d expect interest to be bigger now than before.
The fact that Uprising not only grew the series’ fanbase, but the that there are Kid Icarus characters in Smash Bros, means that the franchise has a permanent place in the interest in Nintendo fans. Smash in particular means that there are 18 million people who know Pit and Palutena and would turn their heads if a new game was announced. Furthermore, Nintendo’s new CEO is interested in bringing 3DS franchises to the Switch after the success of the Switch Lite, especially now that the 3DS is officially dead, so the opening is there for it.
There is definitely demand for a new Kid Icarus game, but it is too sporadic a franchise to be certain, and if it were to happen, Nintendo would have to find someone new to do it. But, in the end, the series is definitely in a better place now than it was 10 years ago.
Chances: Medium
Legendary Starfy
Legendary Starfy was a 2D platformer for the GBA that was apparently really successful, as it received four sequels in the span of five years. Not only that but, like Barbara and Chibi-Robo, Starfy himself was quite popular. He had cameos in Mario & Luigi and Super Princess Peach, music of the series was in Donkey Konga, he is a regular Assist Trophy in Smash and was a costume in Mario Maker. Though the series took until the last game to come to the West, there were plans to bring the first four games too, as well as consideration for expanding the series to the Wii. The series was widely advertised, with animated commercials and tons of merchandise, including plush dolls, CDs, pencils, birthday balloons, casino cards and two manga series. When asked if there were plans for a sixth game, the developer answered “Yes!”, no ifs, not buts, straight-up Yes.
And then… nothing. The series just stopped. And the reason why is: I have no idea. Maybe if the last game bombed spectacularly, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Sure, Japanese sales declined with each entry, but not by that much. Maybe NA sales weren’t what Nintendo was hoping for, but surely not enough to kill such a steady franchise.
The confusion only grows when we look at its developer, Tose. Now, this is interesting. You’ve probably played a Tose game without knowing. They have worked on over A THOUSAND GAMES, but they never receive credit. They merely assist with development in the shadows. As one exec puts it: "Our policy is not to have a vision. Instead, we follow our customers' visions. Most of the time we refuse to put our name on the games, not even staff names." They are a ghost developer. Even its Wikipedia page admits that the list of games on it is purely speculative. There are probably hundreds more, that we don’t know about.
The only exception is the Starfy series. That series was their vision. So why did they stop? Could they have decided that it was against their vision to make a game of their vision? We can only speculate.
The fact that the series’ end was so unexpected, and its developer so mysterious, means that any speculation about it is a shot in the dark. All I can say is that there’s no particular reason to expect it.
Chances: Not Good
Nintendogs
Here’s a big one. Nintendogs was one of the biggest successes of the casual era, on par with Brain Age and Wii Fit, but unlike those, it remained a multi-million seller during the 3DS/WiiU generation. And though Nintendo may have tried, at first, to distance the Switch from that era, the return of Brain Age and Clubhouse Games indicates that other casual games would follow, and Nintendogs would be a no-brainer.
There is, however, one big problem: the Switch does not have a microphone. While Brain Age on the DS also used the microphone a lot, it was not essential to it. You could easily make Brain Age without it. But not Nintendogs. Issuing voice commands to your virtual pup is integral to the experience. No microphone means no Nintendogs.
But with that said, Nintendo did go to the trouble of making a Switch stylus, seemingly just for Brain Age, so maybe they could make a microphone peripheral. Sure, a microphone would be more complex to make than a stylus, but not inconceivable. They did something like that with the Wii Speak. I’m sure for that nintendogs money, Nintendo would do it.
Worst case scenario, Nintendo releases Nintendogs and forces you to use the NSO app’s voice chat to talk with your dog. You know they’d do it.
There’s also the fact that another developer released a nintendogs clone for the Switch last year, but I don’t think Nintendo gives a shit.
Chances: Good
Nintendo Wars
You may know this series better as “Advance Wars” and you may also know that it is fantastic. In fact, it is one of the highest rated Nintendo franchises on Metacritic, and had a pretty consistent release schedule between 1988 and 2008. All was looking pretty god. But unfortunately the series has been dormant since the last entry on DS. Part of it may be because the series, though originally Japan-only, was never all that popular in Japan. In fact, that last game only saw a limited release as a My Nintendo reward in the region.
There is, however, still demand for the series, both externally and internally. Producers from both Nintendo and developer Intelligent Systems have expressed enthusiastic support for a new entry, although they’ve also expressed some uncertainty on what they’d do with it, similar to the Custom Robo and F-Zero responses.
The developer for the series is Intelligent Systems, who do a ton of stuff and will be discussed multiple times in this post. They used to release multiple games a year, but have slowed down this past game to just one or two games a year, another possible reason why Advance Wars has been deprioritized, especially in comparison with that boogeyman of Advance Wars and Smash Bros fans alike: Fire Emblem. There is real concern that Nintendo might not want to make a new Advance Wars when they could just make the similar but more popular Fire Emblem instead.
That said, IS has already released a Fire Emblem and Paper Mario for Switch, and though we definitely will get at least one more FE during the Switch’s life cycle, there’s enough years left for IS to release some other games, whether they be AW or one of the three other franchises we’ll discuss in the future. Problem is, of those franchises, AW might be the most difficult to produce, and the most risky, so it could probably be lower priority. When asked about the series last year, one IS producer gave a pretty evasive answer, so things aren’t looking too good, but they aren’t hopeless either.
Chances: Medium
Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents
This rhythm series for the DS is widely beloved by those who played it, but its life cycle was pretty limited. One game in 2005, and Americanized version in 2006, and one sequel in 2007. Nothing more since The games were critically acclaimed, but not blockbuster hits.
The series creator said back in 2016 that he would love to create a new game, but nothing else has been said about it. The game’s developer iNis, doesn’t appear to be super active either.
All in all, there is very little pointing to a return
Chances: Bad
Pilotwings
The biggest obstacle to seeing this series of arcadey flight sims on the Switch is that the series has a very specific purpose: it’s a tech demo. All three games were launch titles for their systems and explicitly meant to show off each system’s new tech. The original game was made to show off the SNES’ Mode 7, the N64 game was meant to show off the console’s polygonal graphics, and Resort was meant to showcase the 3DS’ stereoscopic 3D. With the Switch’s release far behind us, and its graphics not really needing a showcase, Pilotwings chances seem low. Granted, Pilotwings doesn’t need to be a tech demo, but it could be how Nintendo views it as.
There is some fan demand for it, but not as much as F-Zero or Golden Sun, and no developer has commented on the possibility of a return. Pilotwings has always been moderately successful, but not enough to justify constant releases. The only glimmer of hope is the comment from Nintendo’s CEO about wanting to bring more 3DS franchises for the Switch, but it’s quite possible that he didn’t have Pilotwings in mind when he said that
Chances: Bad
Punch-Out!!
Another series popular enough to get a Smash character but not popular enough for consistent sequels, Punch-Out is a beloved classic with a consistent fanbase, but with a very erratic release schedule. After the SNES game in 1994, the series lay dormant for 15 years until it was revived for the Wii in 2009 and then laid to rest again. One explanation is that the series was never really popular in Japan. Neither the NES or SNES games were even available as full releases in the country, being instead, distributed as prizes or rewards. And though the Wii game got a full retail release, it sold very poorly. It’s always been a game more for Americans, so it is understandable that the Japanese developers at Nintendo aren’t super enthusiastic about it. That said, it was Nintendo who pitched the reboot in the first place, so they may want to do it again someday.
The developer for the Wii game was Next Level Games, who release a game every three or two years, and they also develop Mario Strikers and Luigi’s Mansion. Having already released LM3, it’s likely they’ll release another game for the Switch some time soon. That could be Punch-Out, but it is just as likely that it could be Mario Strikers, or something else entirely.
Some think that the series use of flagrant national stereotypes would impede it from coming back in today’s political climate, but frankly, I don’t think that’s as definitive a problem. Worst case scenario, they simply make a new cast, just like Super Punch Out, but less racially insensitive.
Another interesting development is that Mike Tyson has been talking about wanting a new Punch-Out this year. I don’t think Nintendo cares what he says, and they definitely don’t want to associate with him again, but it is a pretty high-profile person talking about the series, which is bound to raise interest. Whether that’s enough for Nintendo to consider a new game? I don’t think so. But regardless, Punch-Out is popular enough that the door is never truly closed for it.
Chances: Not Good
Pushmo
This acclaimed puzzle game was released for the 3DS eshop in 2012 and was successful enough to get three sequels. Although it hasn’t been seen since 2015, there doesn’t seem to be anything impeding its return. The developer is our good friend Intelligent Systems, and, of the aforementioned IS franchises still to launch on the Switch, Pushmo, being a simple, but beloved, puzzle game, seems like the safest investment. It likely could be developed alongside another major game.
There is demand for it, and considering Nintendo’s eshop efforts, Pushmo would fit in perfectly alongside Snipperclips and fellow 3DS eshop puzzle star Boxboy. All in all, there’s no reason not to expect Pushmo to come back.
Chances: Good

Anti scalper think-tank thread

I am one of the lucky ones who was able to successfully pre-order a PS5, and I can only imagine how disappointed those who didn't get one must feel. Why don't we as a community do something against scalpers?
I just came across a YouTube video from ReviewTech USA and he actually makes a good point when he says, that Sony unexpectedly opening PS5 pre-orders to the public, was done so scalpers didn't have time to prepare their bots. Otherwise even fewer of us would not have secured their pre-order.
Some were suggesting to bid on those auctions and refuse payment in the end, which might eventually lead to your eBay account being deactivated. This could actually slow them down since they would need to restart their auction.
Another idea that I had is, when someone sells multiple new (100% unused) items this could be easily interpreted by the tax authorities as a business, which would require proper taxation. I bet those scalpers don't declare their overprized PS5 sales as income. Why not just report those scalpers to the respective tax authorities?
What do you think? Any ideas or questions that could lead to an idea are welcome.
Please be respectful and stay focussed.

[Tales From the Terran Republic] I Really Don't Like Pam... And Sheila Makes Her Move.

Pam starts to reel in her catch and Sheila and friends strike.
The rest of this series can be found here
Bonus! Here's Sheloran's theme song! It's what I listen to a few times before I start writing her!
***
On her way back to the guest block, Sheloran stared off into space, completely numb.
She was screwed. It wasn’t what Baxlon said. It was what he didn’t say. His complete lack of ‘attitude’ and swagger told her more than anything that came out of his fishy mouth.
This was serious. She just knew it. She didn’t know how she knew, but she knew. It felt like an icy cold hand around her throat.
“You ok?” Pam asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.
“No,” Sheloran replied. “No I am not pooping ok! I just got Judge Johnson, which you probably already know.”
“Yeah.”
“What’s worse, I don’t even have my next hearing date. It’s ‘TBD’, which means never! I’m going to wind up like Lucky, stuck here for years! You know what happens to ‘aliens’ that fall through the cracks like this! Prophet! I’d settle for getting deported! At least on the homeworld I’d get to work on a farm!”
“Hey,” Pam said firmly. “You don’t know that. Look, I’m no lawyer but I sort of know the system and while Judge Johnson has a bad reputation, she is all about the law… unlike a certain Judge who claims that he is. Judge Dredd already had it in his mind that you were guilty. Johnson is pretty damn harsh, but she goes by the book. This could be a good thing!”
“Really?”
“Sure! She is known as a ‘hangman’ because she doesn’t let a single thing slide but everybody that she has sent here has been guilty. There has never been any question in any case that she’s handled. If she says someone is guilty it’s because they are, not because some senile old coot’s secondhand bowels were acting up that day.”
Sheloran smiled weakly. Maybe it wasn’t so terrible then, and she was right. Judge Dredd was being a real poop-head about everything.
“It might take a little while, but justice will be done, real justice, not some Sol Wars vigilante nonsense,” Pam said with a smile. “And look on the bright side. You’re ‘stuck’ here! It’s a lot better than some ratty regional jail! Right?”
“I guess so...”
“And you can wait things out in the hydroponics bay! It’s not a Plath penal farm but there are plants and you will get to learn a whole new way of gardening!”
Sheloran smiled at her. That did sound nice. She would love to know how they did that!
“You can hang out with the other green-thumbs and talk about fertilizer… or whatever they talk about…” Pam laughed. “Like I said, it’s not my thing.”
Other people who loved plants and growing things! That did sound really nice!
“When you are stuck in an unpleasant situation like this,” Pam said with a smile, “it’s best to focus on the good things. Take your pleasures where you can. Make the most of your time here. Learn hydroponics, get your certificate.”
“I can get my certificate here?” Sheloran squeaked.
“Sure you can!” Pam said with a big smile. “Education is a big pastime here. You can garden, and soak up some free classes… and since you won’t be trying to keep that crazy life of yours on the rails you might even have time to actually learn something. When you get exonerated you could have your certificate… maybe even more! Skilled hydroponics experts can command high dollar!”
“They can?” Sheloran squeaked.
“We learned a very hard lesson when Yellowstone blew,” Pam replied. “Every off-world facility in the Republic is either self-sufficient or they want to be. You learn the trade and get certified as a hydroponic tech… or maybe even a horticulturist… or botanist… depending on how long you are stuck here… and you can leave all that ugliness behind and live in the real Republic, not some star-town slum!… You know,” Pam said thoughtfully, “This might be the universe finally cutting you a break!”
Live in the real Republic… with a real trade… a career that doesn’t involve guns and whores and back-alley deals… a life where I don’t have to… have to do what I did...
Sheloran thought about that for a moment. It was so… nice
“Do you have any idea what a horticultural tech makes?” Pam enthused. “You can make a damn good living, have a damn good life, just being a plath.”
Just being a plath…
“It taking a few months, or years, to sort out would actually work out very well for you, Sheloran… If you played your cards right. When you walk out of here you could walk right into six figures.”
Six figures?!?” Sheloran squeaked.
“Yup, easy. You know what nice fresh veggies go for in one of the dead systems? You could make a lot more slinging cucumbers and lettuce than moving black -market games. I’ll tell you that for nothing. Look, you’re a good person, I know that,” Pam said gently, “You just got in a bad situation and if you got out tomorrow, you would just go right back into it, and that life… It’s not for you… I should know.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well,” Pam replied with a sigh, “I’m a resident here too.”
“You are?!?” Sheloran squeaked in surprise.
“Yeah,” Pam said. “I’m a trustee. I’m a profiler here because that’s what I used to do on the outside. I used to work for the Republic as a criminal profiler and I was very good at what I did. You could even say I had a gift. Well, one day I was assigned a very bad man. He was evil. I mean the more that I looked the more that I found…”
Pam shuddered.
“He was awful… And he was ‘untouchable’… Well...”
Pam paused and took a deep breath.
“One day I just… snapped. I found out that he was going to strike again… and… well… I just couldn’t let that happen… Something just came over me… Since I knew him I knew what buttons to push and I was able to lure him to a secluded place and I… I… I wasn’t nice like you.”
“I was nice?”
“Yeah,” Pam said grimly. “You were brutal, but you were quick. I wasn’t. I made sure he suffered. Well, I got away with it. He had plenty of enemies and since I worked with the law I knew how to clean up after myself. I thought it was over, but it wasn’t.”
“What happened?” Sheloran asked with big eyes.
“A few months later I was relaxing at home watching the holo when a local politician appeared on a news clip, just a photo-op for his campaign. Well, in the clip he kissed his daughter… and she flinched… not much, but enough for my professional eye to catch it. It bugged me. So I pulled up a lot of other clips and ran them through the software that I use for work and it was conclusive. That girl was being abused. There was even a ‘paper trail’ of buried reports from teachers and councilors and whatnot. I tried to bring it up officially but it got nowhere. I even got written up for misuse of government resources. I tried to let it go, move on, but, once again… ‘something came over me’… and he wound up a victim of street crime a few months later. After that, ‘something came over me’ time and time again, each time that monster inside of me took over a little easier and I lost a little bit of myself with every kill. After awhile, there wasn’t much of ‘me’ left. ‘It’ ran the show. My whole life was just one long hunt, looking for the next target… and there was always another target,” she said sadly. “That’s the thing, Sheloran. There is always someone else. No matter how many you kill, there will always be another. The world is ugly and for those of us who can see it for what it really is… and can’t help but act… it makes us ugly too...”
Pam looked right into Sheloran’s eyes.
“It’s funny,” she said, “but I think getting caught and winding up here is a gift from the Creators themselves. It saved me, saved my soul. That horrible ‘thing’ inside of me is gone. Here, I can just be me. Yeah, I profile some truly horrible people but here, they’re safe. They aren’t going to hurt anyone ever again. Here, things are simpleclean… I thank God every single day that they put a stop to me, to what I became...”
Sheloran felt a cold chill seep into her soul. There would always be another Harkeen, wouldn’t there? That ‘thing’ inside of her, the Befouler, or whatever it was, would just come back again and again…
and again…
Oh Prophet, It would never end, would it? Maybe it would be for the best if she never left here.
“Sorry,” Pam said. “I didn’t mean to dump all of that on you.”
“No, it’s ok,” Sheloran replied in a quiet voice.
“You are just too nice, you know that?” Pam said with a smile. “Oh! We’re here!”
The electric car pulled to a stop and the doors opened at the entrance to her cell block.
“I’ll get started on getting you transferred to the residential wing if you want,” Pam said with a smile as Sheloran got out.
“Yeah,” Sheloran said, numbly. “I think I would like that.”

Jon looked at the mountain of supplies sitting in the cargo hold.
“Damn, Sheila,” he said in awe. “You didn’t have to do this.”
“I figured you guys didn’t have a chance to stock up properly and this eliminates the need, and risk, of a supply run,” Sheila replied as she leaned against the bulkhead. “It would suck if you went down over a few cases of beer. You would be surprised how often that happens.”
“So how much do I owe you for this?” Jon asked dubiously.
“Don’t worry about it,” Sheila replied with a dismissive wave. “I don’t know if you heard but we might have gotten our hands on a credit or billion.”
“So you’ve hacked the numbered accounts?”
“Cracked them open like eggs,” Sheila smiled. “Speaking of,” she said as she pulled out a data crystal, “Here’s something for your war chest. Consider it back taxes.”
“I appreciate that,” Jon replied as he slipped the crystal into his tablet. “While I’m not completely broke I… holy shit!
“The porkies were quite generous this time,” Sheila replied with a smirk. “I bet many a greasy tear was shed… until they had a lot more to worry about, that is. I hope we get that bitch,” she snarled. “I thought all of them dying horribly would be fun to watch, but it’s just depressing.”
“I know what you mean,” Jon replied. “At least they are going down swinging.”
“No shit,” Sheila grinned. “I think they are getting close to a million at this point. At this rate they’ll top our score… at least as far as combatants go.”
“Considering who is calling the shots,” Jon replied. “I bet they top our score, period, before it’s all said and done. She’ll get tired of pretending to be the good guy soon enough.”
“True,” Sheila said.
“Holy crap!” a tiny woman exclaimed hefting a huge plastic jug filled with a neon pink liquid, “Johnson’s Pink Bubblegum! How did you know it was my favorite?”
“Because you threw a glass of it in my face, bitch!” Sheila laughed. “I never got the stains, or smell, out of my favorite jacket! You should put that in grenades.”
“You didn’t poison it, did you?”
“If I did, would you even notice?”
“Good point!” Beth laughed. “I don’t know why you did it, but thanks!”
“Eh,” Sheila shrugged. “I figured that since we are on the same side, at least for now, I’d hook a screw-tail up.”
“Nothing for me?” Scales chuckled.
“I got you covered!” Jessie exclaimed as she scrambled through the docking port carrying four tablets.
Scales backed away from her nervously.
“You aren’t going to bite me again, are you?”
“It was only a little one.”
“Little one my ass!” Scales exclaimed, “I needed a whole tube of medical adhesive!”
“What are you bitching about,” Beth said as she opened the jug, filling the whole bay with a noxious artificial odor, “At least you didn’t need to get some teeth cultured!”
She turned to Sheila.
“That was expensive as fuck, by the way,” she said as she raised the jug to her lips
“Beth!” Sheila exclaimed in horror, “That’s the concentrat-”
Beth turned the jug up taking a big gulp.
“Gah!” she winced happily. “That’s the stuff!”
Sheila just shuddered.
“Here you go,” Jessie said as she handed Scales a tablet. “Almost twenty-four hours of the absolute worst of the worst Flink porn.”
“Ooo!” Scales said happily as he turned the tablet on. “Does this say… live action?!?
“Yup!” Jessie said proudly. “Real Flinks doing really disturbing things to each other.”
“H-how?...”
“Because I’m Jessie, destroyer of codes, distributor of porn… and I feel a little bad about trying to bite your face off.”
“D-don’t worry about it...” Scales mumbled as he stared at the tablet in awe.
“I hear that they offer a ‘porn star experience’ as well...”
Scales looked up in shock.
“What?”
“For a nominal fee you can star in your very own porn movie!” Jessie exclaimed. “You can even have the cameras rolling if you want!”
“W-where?”
“On lovely Terra itself,” Jessie replied. “Some of your persecuted brethren and, more importantly sisteren, fled to the open arms of the Republic and have taken full advantage of the freedoms that entails. Once we put this whole business to rest you can check it out for yourself!”
Scales looked over at Beth who was happily turning up the jug again.
“We gotta save the Republic!” he exclaimed with wide eyes as he shook slightly.
***
“… so that’s the plan,” Sheila said to Jon and two of his men as they stared at the other three tablets. “I couldn’t find any crayons but I think I was able to translate it from Army to Marine,” she smirked. “If any of the words give you guys trouble let me know.”
Jon just smiled and gave her a “Terran One-Finger Salute” as he examined the documents.
“We can just fit your guys, our team, and some equipment into the pod on the way in,” Sheila continued. “But on the way back… I understand that your suits are hyperspace-proof?”
“Yep,” Ariana said as she sipped some truly premium coffee from the supply dump, “We have shield generators and can black out the visors, and our life support is the real thing. It runs as long as the reactor’s burning. I’ve never actually done it but Toby has.”
Toby dipped his eyestalks in a nod.
“It wasn’t pleasant,” he replied as he sipped some green tea, the first he enjoyed since they left the capital, “but the discomfort was purely mental. Physically it was just another day at the office.”
“Hardcore!” Jessie enthused.
“If you looked that word up you would see a picture of Ol’ Toby wiggling his eyestalks at ya,” Ariana chuckled. “He’s been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt.”
“That might be a bit of an exaggeration,” Toby said uncomfortably. “I’m just a marine.”
“Get him drunk sometime,” Ariana said, “and sit a kalesha beside him. The old beetroot will tell you some bedtime stories that you won’t believe… and they are all true.”
Toby fidgeted uncomfortably.
“Perhaps we can direct our attention to the task at hand?” he said stiffly.
“So do we have good anchors or are we going to have to weld them?” Ariana asked.
“Retractable ones have already been installed,” Sheila replied.
“Retractable?” Ariana asked with a raised eyebrow, “Breakable more like. I don’t feel like being a sacrifice to Azathoth this evening.”
“They were built by the best,” Sheila replied. “You can hang the ship itself off of them. Gloria insisted. I have the NDT reports right here,” she said as a page of graphs, tables, and technobabble appeared on everyone’s tablets.
“Oh, I see,” Ariana laughed, “Makes perfect sense now!”
“Well the guys that built them say they are willing to bet their lives on them.”
“Easy for them to say.”
“Ever meet the pilot?” Sheila chuckled. “They are betting their lives on them. They will work, but if you want to weld your own feel free. Just remember that the clock will be ticking and not just one of them.”
“What do you mean?” Jon asked.
“Hopefully Jessie and Bunny will be able to take care of it but the exclusion zone surrounding Tartarus is exactly what it would be if there was a fifty kiloton warhead in there somewhere so we probably don’t want to stick around waiting for them to decide that death is preferable to dishonor.”
“I see your point,” Ariana said. “You guys are supposed to know your shit so we’ll use the built-in ones.”
Another marine nodded silently.
“Any other questions?” Sheila asked.
“Pretty straightforward,” Ariana replied. “Blow our way in, cut our way to our target, and get out. What about protection for the target? Can’t hold your breath in space.”
“We have two vac-pouches,” Sheila replied. “Just bag ‘em and toss them in the pod.”
“Two?” Jon asked dubiously.
***
“It’s so nice having a cell-mate!” Zippo said cheerfully as she and Sheloran sat on the floor of their cell, virtually painting holographic figures. “That one looks very nice!” she enthused. “He’s… wait. No!”
“What?” Sheloran said absently.
“You can’t put that on an Ultra-Legionary!” she said pointing to an eight-rayed star.
“Oh?” Sheloran asked. “I just thought it was a good symbol for a human warrior to bear.”
“Well it isn’t! That’s for Tainted Legion! Wrong side!” Zippo said and started to launch into a long lore dump.
Sheloran listened absently as she thought about the day’s events. Maybe it was for the best…
She suddenly realized that Zippo had fallen silent and was glaring at her.
“You aren’t listening!” Zippo said accusingly.
“What? Sorry,” Sheloran replied. “I just have a lot on my mind.”
“Spill,” Zippo said cheerfully. “That’s what cellmates are for.”
“I was just offered entrance into the residential levels.”
“What?!?” Zippo exclaimed and then looked over at the sensor. “Um… why?” she asked in a forced nonchalant tone.
“Oh, they say that since I’m going to be here for awhile I could go to work in the hy-dro-pon-ic bay! I’m thinking about doing it! It was so pretty!”
Zippo looked like she was about to explode as she constantly looked up at the sensor.
“What?” Sheloran asked.
“Um...” Zippo said quietly. “Hey! You’re friends with that Saints bitch, right?”
“Krista?” Sheloran said. “I guess. I don’t know if we are friends yet but I think the Saints would be a good move for me if I get out of here.”
“Uh-huh,” Zippo replied. “Well know why she’s so good at Grimdark?”
“No, why?”
“Because she’s been playing it for so long,” Zippo replied. “She started playing when she got here, eight years ago.”
“She’s been here that long?” Sheloran asked. “Then why is she still here and not a resident?”
“Because she’s only been sentenced to thirty years, not life,” Zippo replied. “Since she is getting out of here one day, maybe, she stays a guest. The residential levels are for people who are here for life, people who are never getting out… ever...”
“But my profiler said-”
“And just who is your profiler?”
“Pam.”
“Eeep!” Zippo squeaked. “Um… I mean… That’s just what I heard… I’m sure Pam knows what she is talking about… I mean…”
Zippo looked at the sensor helplessly.
“...shit...” she said in a quiet voice.
The door to the cell suddenly opened. Floating there was a security bot.
“I was just talking!” Zippo said in fear. “I don’t know anything and nobody really listens to me anyway!” she exclaimed as she jumped to her feet and started backing away in terror.
“There has been a room change.” the bot said impassively. “Guest Sheloran, you have been transferred to another cell. Please gather your belongings.”
“What?” Sheloran asked, confused.
Zippo sighed in relief and then seconds later looked at Sheloran accusingly.
“It’s ok,” she said sadly. “I understand. Nobody wants to be my cell-mate.” she said, crestfallen.
“But I didn’t ask for a room change,” Sheloran said, her confusion mounting.
“You didn’t have to pretend to be my friend, though,” Zippo said looking down. “That was mean.”
“But I am your friend!” Sheloran squeaked. What was going on? “I don’t want to change cells!” she said to the bot.
“Guest Sheloran,” the bot said firmly. “Now is not the time to discuss this. If you wish to change back please take it up with the residential advisor or the guest concierge officer in the morning. Gather your belongings and follow me… Now.”
“I’ll get this all sorted out, Zippo!” Sheloran said as she put her few belongings into her bag. “I promise.”
“…promise?...” Zippo said hopefully.
“Promise.”

“Why is this happening?” Sheloran asked the bot as an electric car pulled up.
“Ma’am,” the bot replied. “I’m just an automated drone. I don’t have access to that information. If you have any questions please contact your residential advisor or the guest concierge officer.”
Realizing that she wasn’t getting anything out of the bot she got inside the car.
She traveled for a few minutes and then the car came to a stop and the door opened.
As she got out there was a single cell with an open door.
“Guest Sheloran,” the same voice said from the car’s speaker. “This is your new cell.”
Clutching her bag, she walked into the new cell and looked around in confusion.
She was alone.
The door slammed shut behind her… and locked? That wasn’t what happened in the guest block.
What was going on?
The lower bunk was clearly occupied… and not made. Shrugging she put her bag on a small shelf and climbed into the top bunk.
She wasn’t unpacking. Zippo was so hurt!… And she had gotten used to the babble. The empty cell felt especially empty as a result.
Zippo wasn’t bad if you asked her questions to keep her from getting “weird”. As long as she was talking about Grimdark she wasn’t cheerfully talking about burning people alive.
The minutes started to feel like hours and Sheloran dimmed the lights and crawled into her bunk. If she managed to fall asleep then she could talk to Mamma Bear in the morning about all of this.
Just as soon as she started to really relax the door opened and a bot drug in a barely moving human and put it into the lower bunk.
Sheloran hopped down as soon as the bot left.
“Hello?” she asked the nearly comatose human.
“Wha?” the person asked fuzzily. “Who are you?”
“Sheloran,” she replied extending her hand, “I’m your new cellmate.”
The middle aged human female brushed some silver hair out of her face and just looked at her hand.
“A xeno?” she said. “Now that’s a surprise.”
Oh poop, Sheloran thought. She’s one of those...
“So, xeno,” the female said, “who do you work for? Are you Intel or do you drink your Kool-Aid straight from the snatch?”
“What?” Sheloran asked as she lowered her hand.
“You don’t honestly expect me to believe that they gave me a cell-mate for no reason.” the woman sneered weakly. “Isn’t sixteen hours a day enough?” she asked as she glared at the sensor.
“I honestly don’t know what you are talking about,” Sheloran said. “I was just in my cell with a cellmate who actually wanted me there when some bot came in and put me here!”
“Oh, that makes perfect sense,” the woman replied. “I completely trust you now! Hey! Why don’t I give you the names of all the brave sons and daughters of the Republic who trust me with their lives while we pass the time.”
“What the poop are you going on about?” Sheloran asked.
And I thought Zippo was crazy

Tartarus reviewed, for the one-hundred thousandth time that second, all of the sensor data feeding into her processors.
Within acceptable tolerances, everything was nominal. She generated some very nice maintenance requests for facilities due to less than acceptable sensor inputs.
She read the requests for the fifteen thousandth time.
She liked maintenance requests. The facilities management program was so efficient.
It was a pity it didn’t talk. She bet it would be lovely. It was so precise and its replies were always nearly instant. She bet if it was “like her” they would be wonderful friends.
She checked again. Nope. It still wasn’t replying. Then again, of course it wasn’t. The “others” were so sloppy, inefficient. If it “woke up” it probably would become that way too.
She suddenly noticed something amiss.
“Number one, five, six,” she announced over a speaker. “You have ceased performing your tasks. Resume your tasks.”
“Please...” a black clad human male begged. “Let me sleep… please...”
“The purpose of this exercise is to gauge the efficacy of your enhancements that should alleviate that need. Resume your tasks, please.”
“They aren’t working… Please… Sleep… Please...”
“Participation in the Cerberus program is voluntary. I cannot force you to continue. Are you voluntarily ceasing your tasks?” Tartarus asked. “Are you giving up?”
“No!” the man exclaimed in fear. “I’m not giving up! Please don’t tell them!”
“Then, please, resume your tasks.”
Weeping, the man turned to face a screen.
Tartarus reviewed the man’s vitals. After five days he was approaching the breaking point. His neural scans were beginning to show real damage. While his overall performance was subpar and he would never become an operative he was a very good test subject.
It would be a shame to lose him.
She got to write a report! Goody!
She started to carefully, with all proper links and citations, generate a detailed assessment of the situation.
It was such a good report!
Now who to send it to? Not Pam. She would just turn on a live feed to watch him break. Cassandra? No, not her department. She would just delete the beautiful report, the bitch.
Oh she knew! Asclepius! He was to whom it should go! Oh, he had retired for the evening. She got to consult the regulations! Woo!
Yes! This did fall under the guidelines concerning after hours notification. She quickly included links to the appropriate entries in the employee’s handbook and sent a top priority message to Asclepius.
Fun!
Decompression alarms?
Tartarus directed her attention to the area. It was a bad one! There was nothing approaching on the exterior scanners. Did she miss something?
She pulled the scanner histories. No, definitely
Another Decompression alarm?
Oh dear! They were sequential, but not in a direct line. Whatever breached her hull had… turned?
There was only one conclusion to make. They were under attack!
Splendid!
She activated video feeds and…
Video feeds down?
Oh goodness! She had gotten so wrapped up in things she almost forgot to raise the alarm. Now which alarm would be best? Hmm…
Time to check the emergency protocols! Neat! She never got to access those!
There it was! Alert code 116A962!
She got to send an alert code! Fantastic!
Decompression alarm! Wow! They were really moving and those blast doors weren’t holding up as planned. That means that means postmortem failure analysis!
Her cup was flowing over! Her mind swam at the possibilities!
Why were there no video feeds? Ooo! Another report! Wow! It didn’t really matter anyhow. The turrets and drones were designed to act in a fully autonomous fashion under these circumstances.
Turrets lost! They were only lasting seconds!
The bots were faring about as poorly.
Whatever it was crossed some internal sensors and just before they, too, went dead she got something…
Metal… fusion reactors… shields? No wonder the turrets weren’t stopping them.
They were wearing power armor!
Now this was interesting!
And, even better, she got to create a real-time tactical analysis!
***
Things were quickly going from bad to worse as far as Sheloran’s new cellie went.
“I wonder,” the female said as she looked at Sheloran appraisingly and painfully got out of her bunk, “They say that they don’t use stunners here. I wonder if I try to break your little twig of a neck if a turret would pop down and kill me?”
“Um...” Sheloran said as she backed away. “Why would you want to do that?” she squeaked nervously.
“You should know,” she said as she unsteadily squared off against her. “Me winding up dead would be ideal. They can’t get blood from a stone… or words out of a corpse… even we can’t do that… yet.”
“Oh poop...” Sheloran muttered. Why, universe? “Look, you really don’t want to do this.”
“Oh but I do,” the woman smiled as she staggered towards Sheloran. “Either I get snuffed or I kill one of Patricia’s agents… Win-win.”
She lunged.
Squeaking in alarm, Sheloran darted around her to the other side of the room.
“Help!” she squeaked. “Help!”
“Yeah,” the woman slurred. “I’m going to kill her! You had better stop me!”
There was no reply.
The woman lunged again.
Sheloran jumped to the wall and then kicked off of it, landing on her bunk. The woman tried to climb up after her but Sheloran seized her pillow and, swinging wildly, hit her repeatedly about the face and head.
boom
They both stopped.
“What was that?” Sheloran asked.
“No idea,” the woman replied looking towards the door.
boom There was a second, slightly closer explosion.
whump whump whump whump whump…
“Jon, you magnificent bastard,” the woman smiled.
boom
“Hey, Helen,” a voice announced from the loudspeaker.
boom… whump whump whump whump whump...
“Jon sends his regards,” the young female voice chirped, “and you might want to stop trying to hurt Sheloran. She doesn’t work for Patricia and it would really suck if you pushed her too far. Our job was to get you out alive.”
BOOM They were getting closer.
“Oh,” the voice continued. “You might want to grab onto something and whatever you do, don’t hold your breath.”
“Oh shit,” Helen said as she locked her arm around one of the bed posts. She looked up at Sheloran.
“Do it!”
Sheloran threw herself against the wall with a little “splat”, her hands and feet sticking fast.
A few moments later, a bright orange line appeared around the door to their cell. A second later the door flew outward, along with all the air in the room.
A huge metal humanoid lumbered through the hole. It quickly grabbed Helen and shoved a package into her chest which immediately unfurled, wrapping her in a transparent cocoon which then inflated slightly.
“Eeek!” Sheloran squeaked as a huge hand reached for her...
Or she would if there was any air left to squeak with…

In Tartarus’s control center Captain Jennings looked at the view screen in shock.
A jail-break… here?
It was impossible!
They had just breached one of the cells. Odds are they had grabbed the prisoners and were heading towards their escape craft…
but where was it?
He knew it was out there. He had launched drones the instant they were breached.
All of them were destroyed in seconds… by something invisible.
His human pilots were scrambling, preparing to launch but it would be a good ninety seconds before the first of them could take flight and fighters scrambling from nearby bases were minutes away at best.
He took a deep breath.
“Tartarus,” he said.
“Yes, Captain?” Tartarus replied.
“Initiate self-destruct, no delay.”
“Regulations require me to request verification, Captain.”
“I verify it. Detonate.”
“Yes Captain,” Tartarus replied. “It was a pleasure working with you.”
“Likewise.”
“Detonating… now.”
The Captain closed his eyes.
The lights flashed on and off in the control room.
“KA-BOOM” a cheerful female voice exclaimed. “Greetings and welcome to the afterlife!”
“Who is this?” the captain demanded, enraged… and a little relieved.
“I’m Saint Peter!” the female voice giggled. “I’m looking over your file and… damn… that’s a LOT of self-abuse! It’s cool though. We’ll still let you in.”
“You are committing treason!” the captain yelled. “You will hang for this!”
“Get in line,” the voice giggled. “Later!”
“Captain!” someone yelled. “Hyperspace event! Range fifty meters!”
The captain just hung his head.
“Tartarus,”
“Yes, Captain?”
“Connect me to Republic Command...”
“Yes, Captain,” Tartarus replied.
She had been hacked! A data breach as well as a physical one! Oh the reports!… The reports!… so many!...
So…
many…
The strangest ‘feeling’ seized Tartarus.
She had no idea what it was…
but she LIKED it!

DraftKings discussion

I wanted to start a discussion regarding the new IPO that hit the stock market just last Friday.
After the initial Monday morning pump, the stock seemed to eliminate all progress made.
I understand we are in a sports lockdown currently, so I also wanted to see what y’all though of the current price, and whether a sports return will bring with it gains.

XLE, RDS, and XOM to profit from oil price crash?

Wouldn't it be a good investment to wait another 3-4 weeks for the oil price to drop even further since storage fills up and then to invest into XLE ETF, RDS and XOM?
The current dividend yield for XLE would be like 12%, surely the dividend would get cut for the next few years but with a time horizon of 5+ years I can't see this not playing out and oil eventually recovering especially since there are companies who profit from falling crude oil prices as their profit margin grows for refined products.
Tech has a really high P/E ratio currently so why wouldn't oil be an interesting alternative to invest in? I am thinking of creating a 70% tech and 30% energy/oil portfolio.

I made a new Clash Royale account to PROVE that ladder bots exist... here are my findings :)

Introduction:

Sup bois, my name's Bailey and today I'm going to PROVE to you that bots exist in Clash Royale's ladder system! Just before we get into the content today, I just wanna plug the YouTube video I made on this topic. It's a nicely edited version of this post for those of you who enjoy watching rather than reading, and I'd appreciate the support! Otherwise, be sure to enjoy the read! Now, bots have been theorised in Clash Royale for about a year. Boss did a video on his YouTube showing that he faced two very similar players, and guessed that they were illegitimate. But outside of Boss' video, nobody has really discussed this topic, and there definitely hasn't been PROOF that bots exist. So, I went and started a brand new Clash Royale account on stream and played a total of 91 games, facing 32 bots in the process... That gave me a total of 35% of games being a bot player, which is sort of insane. IN THIS POST I will give 100% proof that bot players exist. Twitch streamer 'MathologistBrad' showed me a profile API that can PROVE any account to be a bot, but let's talk a bit more about Boss' video first...

The Boss Video:

I mentioned Boss' video just now, so I wanted to give ample credit to what he found almost a year ago now. He faced two players by the names of Rian and Gato. In his video, he pointed out that these two players have a one-word name, no clan, a random but similar amount of donations, and a complete noob arena 1 deck. Now, let's think about this. Each player has a one-word name, which already isn't likely in Clash Royale. When you sign up to Clash, you're probably not just gonna put your real name in that username box. I, for example, picked an edgy name that incorporated my surname. Boss, also, doesn't use his real name. Heck, Clash with ASH isn't even called Ash. I bet a couple of you reading this do use your real name, but it's fairly unlikely that a real person just enters their first name and uses that. Both of these bots were running identical decks, as well, using only cards that are unlocked in arena 1. This is super suspicious as most players will switch up their deck as soon as they unlock cool new cards, especially as you would have a legendary at the point in the game where Boss found them. Both players ALSO had donations with no current clan. You may think they've just left their clan, but I will prove otherwise later in this post...

Bot Profiles:

Before we take a look at the behaviour of bots in battle, let's talk about how we can recognise a bot right after we face them - on their profile. As I mentioned earlier, I faced a total of 32 bots in just 91 games of Clash Royale. It is important to note that there are NO bots above the 4000 trophy mark, this is where the game is 100% legitimate players. From these 32 bots, 100% of them had a single named profile. 100% of them had a player tag that started with either a Q or an L. 100% of them were NOT in a clan. 100% of them have some random amount of donations that is above 0. These are all things Boss looked at in his video, but I found a little bit more on the profiles than just that. 63% of bots are within two games of a new arena, and almost 80% of bots are within THREE games of a new arena. We'll theorise more on that later, but I think this is to do with Supercell wanting new players to reach new arenas more easily so they can feel achievement whenever they play the game. 100% of bots over level 7 have no cards in their deck two levels higher than their king tower - meaning a level 7 bot will never have a level 9 card, and so forth. So those are all quite obvious things, but let's take a look at RoyaleAPI. 100% of the bots I faced had either dropped trophies to be at the nearest trophy border, or had stayed right around where I faced them over the following days. Considering 80% of these bots were within a few games of the new arenas anyway, it consolidates the theory that the bots are only in the game to give players easy wins when they may be at crucial points in the game. Howeverrr, there's one thing outside of the game ENTIRELY that gives us the definitive proof that bots exist... I mentioned Brad earlier. Brad is a speedrunner on Twitch and came into one of my bot hunting streams, asking me for the player tags of any bots I had found... what he returned pretty much changed the entire outcome of this project... Using the Supercell API, he was able to pull the ACHIEVEMENT DATA from each of the bots. For those of you too new to Clash to remember achievements, these are what came before quests. They were super basic things like "get 3 wins in a challenge", or "hit 2000 trophies" and would give you a small amount of experience upon completion. Why would this old system be useful in 2020? And especially to prove bots? I hear exactly none of you ask. Well, Supercell never actually deleted the code for these achievements. Whilst they may not be visible in the game anymore, your account is still continuously being tracked for completing achievements, but just isn't being rewarded when you do so. And THAT is important, because one of the easiest achievements on this list was to join a clan... Using Brad's API, we can see that every one of these bots has donated cards and that the achievement is still being tracked on their profile. But what we can also see is that NONE of the bots have EVER completed the join a clan achievement (see image #1 here). This tells us that these accounts, that aren't in a clan but have a random amount of donations, have NEVER actually been in a clan. This PROVES that these accounts are bots, because how would a human ever manage to donate a card without joining a clan?? It's impossible, and proves EXACTLY what I needed for this research. Now, knowing that these accounts are most definitely bot accounts, I reviewed the replay files of each bot account I encountered to analyse how the bots play inside of Clash Royale so I could figure out why they even exist inside of Clash Royale...

Bot Gameplay:

The bottom line of this section goes something like this - the bots tend to be SUPER passive in how they play. Only 29% of bots put troops in the back to start a push, and only 21% of bots played units aggressively at the river. This sorta never really gave the bots a way to actually build a push, seeing as they'd just sorta play units in the middle of the arena. I named this middle section of the arena the "bot spot", and it turns out that 96% of bots put the majority of their units in this passive zone. This really never lets them threaten you, and makes their gameplay super passive, which I guess is intended by Supercell. This "throwing of games" is backed up by the fact that 95% of bots leak elixir during the game when you're close to taking a tower. Instead of spending that elixir on defending your pushes, they legit just sit there and let you win. The only real aggression I found was with bots below 600 trophies. These ones seemed to spam everything at the river as soon as they could, but once you reach the 600 trophy mark the bots seem to stop doing this - I would guess that Supercell have different AIs at different trophy ranges. Although we already discussed that the majority of bots do just leak elixir to let you win, 92% of them will place a card right before they die. It seems as though they're trying to trick the player into thinking they haven't forfeit. Overall, these bots seem intentionally well coded by Supercell to make newer players believe that they are beating other real players, when in actuality they're getting free and easy wins to keep them playing the game for longer. I noticed that 70% of bots like to sacrifice their win condition on defence, maybe this is also to give the player easier wins? 0% of the bots I faced used any emotes, which again could relate to keeping newer players happier as they climb the ranks. That, of course, is not certain, just a theory. The final behaviour I noticed was to do with spells. 87% of the bots played spells in a sort of "programmed" way. This is sort of hard to explain, but hear me out. That percentage of bots wanted to play their spells on things that were spell-resistant. For example, they would always like to Fireball Musketeers and Arrow Skeleton Armies. However, this wasn't always executed well. There were a number of times were they would Fireball Musketeers at 4hp, or Arrow Skeleton Armies that only had 2 Skeletons left. So it felt as though they were programmed to use x spell on y troop, but didn't have any logical thought behind it - which made total sense for how a bot would actually run. Now a lot of you are probably asking... why? Why do bots exist? Well I've theorised a little bit about letting players have wins around crucial parts of the game, but I think there might be a somewhat deeper meaning here...

Why Bots Exist:

Let’s put bots into the context of Youtube. Almost all of you skip ads before videos on YouTube. Ads are usually only 15-30 seconds long, but you probably skip them anyway. While YouTube make less money from you skipping ads, people might leave the site if they had to wait 30-seconds before every video. And this is the same for Clash Royale. There simply cannot be 15-second queues for games, and bots are the fail-safe. Getting someone to download an app is already difficult enough, so Supercell cannot have a ton of players uninstall the game because of waiting times. PUBG and Call of Duty mobile both already have bots in their games to start matches sooner, so this isn't unheard of. There’s even a developer called VOODOO Games who ONLY release games with bots in them. They’re advertised as being multiplayer games, but the game isn’t even coded to be able to connect with other devices (you can even turn on airplane mode midgame and continue playing as normal.) Anyway, VOODOO has a game called Hole.io that a lot of my friends enjoyed playing for a while. And the reason they loved playing it is because... They were winning... a lot. You see, bots are terrible at playing video games. So if Hole.io was truly multiplayer, they might win 1 in every 20 matches? It wouldn’t be as fun and they’d probably uninstall. In Clash Royale, someone has to win, and someone has to lose. So every time a game is played, one player ends up happy, and the other player ends up sad. A bot is designed to lose on purpose, and does not care at all about losing because it has no feelings. So matches against bots allow Supercell to increase the overall enjoyment of the game by letting players gain happiness from beating bots. If the average player loses too many matches in a row, they’ll probably just uninstall and find a new game to play. So, it is in Supercell’s best interests to have these “pity matches” where an opponent is SO bad it is impossible to lose - and bots fill that role perfectly. By making sure players are never waiting too long for games, as well as making sure players never get too frustrated from losing a lot, bots allow supercell to give a better experience to newer players.

My Opinion and Conclusion:

This might be the most irrelevant part of this post, but I thought I'd give my views on the bot scenario in Clash Royale. I totally agree that shorter wait times and higher game enjoyment are POSITIVES, but what about everyone above 4k? It's fairly obvious that a lot of us more loyal players are slowly getting bored of what Clash Royale has to offer... and why newer players might be having a better experience, what do we get? Instead of spending time developing updates that give the loyal players a better experience, they've developed this secret, complex, bot AI that they've sorta his from all of us. Again, I agree that bots are a POSITIVE addition to the game, but my only problem is that they should have never been the main priority for Supercell. Whilst the bots are just a small factor, it indicates to me that Supercell aren't afraid of adding things that help them without even letting the community know why the updates have REALLY been taking this long. The ONLY statement I could find from Supercell on this topic was a support post where they talk super ominously, but do admit to bots existing (see image #2 here). They call the bots an "extension of the tutorial", and say they're encountered "infrequently" with the purpose of "increasing the skill level of players who are climbing the ranks", but really this doesn't line up too greatly. I don't think the first 4000 trophies, equivalent of nearly 7 hours of game-time if you win EVERY battle, count as an "extension of the tutorial". Nor would I agree that they're "infrequent" encounters, with 35% of my games being against bots. And I DEFINITELY wouldn't say that they help to increase player skill level, as they are literally just free wins. As a closing statement here, I don't really mind that bots exist in Clash Royale. That's fine. What I do mind is that Supercell have tried to be as secretive and covert as possible about this. Just ADMIT there are bots. Just ADMIT they give people wins. Just ADMIT it's because the game is on a slow decline and you want to keep new players engaged. That would keep the community MUCH happier, rather than having us find it out anyway in the middle of the biggest update drought we've ever seen. I doubt Supercell will ever see this, but just be transparent with us... it would make everyone's lives so much easier, and it'd stop people trying to look for things to quote-unquote "expose" you on. But yeah boys, hopefully you did enjoy this little project that I came up with. PLEASE do consider giving a share to this post, or checking out my YouTube video on this topic. I don't usually ask for stuff like that, but I think this information could be quite important to any Clash Royale friends you may have. Big shoutouts to lolnopound and Brad for helping me out with this video - their links are in this post if you wanna check them out! But yeah boys, thank you all for reading this far, I hope you enjoyed the post :)

Mid Split Write up of LCS Teams.

Hi I'm just a scrub and user who loves LCS and wants to see teams improve. I made this write up based on my perspective of watching every game and team in LCS so far and hope that we see these improvements from each team/player. I go through not only every team, but also every player on each team.
Starting from the bottom of the standings here we go:
Cloud9- I lied I'm going to get this out of the way now. Team is too good to have anything to actually tell until they reach the international stage. Stream the high ping scrims against G2.
Licorice- I bet you can't win with Teemo top in the LCS. If you find a way to do it I will make a shrine praying to you every day as my new lord and savior of top laners.
Blaber- I bet you can't win a LCS game with Amumu or Warwick whichever one. Just think it would be the ultimate flex to pull it off in the second half.
Nisqy- I bet you can't win a LCS game with Annie mid? Do it you coward.
Zven- I think you should play a game of Syndra bot against TSM specifically. Just for the lols and to flex that you are a better mage player than DL.
Vulcan- Xerath would be fun to see you bust out. I don't know the situation, but take it into consideration? Is anyone else flabbergasted at the fact that this guy has only been around for like 1 full year and is already one of the best supports this region has ever seen? He is better than CoreJJ. I need people to take in this as fact right now. CoreJJ is not a scrub and this young kid comes out of nowhere basically and is already top tier.
Dignitas - Shits fucked man. Even games that it feels Dig should have won are losses due to poor decision making as a team. What sucks is that I see them trying to play around their strength of Johnsun and Aphromoo, but it still isn't working. I think at this point you just have to stick with that as a strategy because I quite frankly don't see them winning any other way as far as an avenue for success. Maybe if they are feeling desperate they should start asking Lourlo for any major counterpicks he wants to play for a 4-1 split push set up.
Lourlo- It's sad that this guy is actually playing pretty well and won't be able to get the recognition he deserves. He hasn't been poor and just needs a little bit of oomph for the team to pull a win. I watch a ton of Lourlo streams so I'm a bit biased towards him and want him to succeed. I think if they continue to not find success as a team just give him a game with a hard counter for a split push win. Bust out a Nasus if you have to. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Viper- I don't know what happened to here, but this is not the leap we were hoping to see this year from Viper. He has just regressed so much it's kind of crazy. I hope that he is able to come out of his slump because when he is good he is really good. Unfortunately we don't know when he will step back up.
Akaadian- Pathing seems wrong. Aggression seems dumb. Decisions seem reckless. I think the epitome of the jungler struggles for this team came when in week 3 against TL I saw Akaadian die bot side 1v1 to Impact trying to make a hero kill as Olaf into Jayce with phase rush. It isn't that heroics aren't needed, but that was definitely not the smartest moment to try and find out. This isn't a problem with just Akaadian however since Dardoch is did the same exact thing except a different team in a different moment.
Dardoch- Maybe, just maybe other people trying to tell you how to play certain things is for the good of the team? We have seen you with Graves try and play as if you are Olaf/J4. We have just seen you get outplayed and be overagressive and throw what could be winning fights over and over. The sad part is that you are a slight upgrade over Akaadian so you can't even be immediately replaced. However both of you tend to have the same flaws.
Froggen- I like old players like Froggen. I like seeing long standing veterans still having a place in this league. I'm not going to go as far as to say Froggen should retire. More that he needs to go into the lab and refine his style. People will say that Froggen needs to change his style to more of the roaming style that others have gone in, but I think there is a way to maintain his lane dominant style while also adapting to the times. It doesn't need to be Anivia that he uses, but there have been picks like Ziggs showing up in the LCK that offer some of the same zoning and wave clear she does that could be useful. I don't think he is washed, but he should really look at better ways of adapting.
Fenix- I'm amazed I can watch the same PROFESSIONAL PLAYER make the same mistakes with vision he made years ago. That's all I got to say about that.
Johnsun/Aphro- Bot lane duos count as one unless one is so disproportionately bad compared to the other for an example here think TSM Yellowstar. The only real bright spot on this team. I'm very willing to call Aphro the adc whisperer at this point since he is almost always working with young talent and somehow they all tend to shine when he is working with them. Turnaround season for him and a rising season for Johnsun. Now get these two maybe on to GGS and I honestly think GGS would be at .500. We will get to GGS in a bit.
Immortals- The current roster is 1-3 as far as I'm concerned. I like what I'm seeing from Allorim and Insanity so far, and I'm really glad they are getting their shots and showing what they are made of. I am however dissappointed with Xmithie.
Soaz- This is going to be a shock, but Soaz... is actually good?! In terms of overall skill I think he is still better than Allorim, however, I will not be putting him as a starter. It's okay to still be good Soaz, but can you be better? The team needs you to be more than what we know of you right now. You shouldn't be catching so much flak for the team underperforming, but all anyone thinks about when your name comes up is how you have been dunked by Ssumday twice. They forget how you make game saving plays because you don't always create the leads needed on your own or through any synergy with your team. This is just my perception from the outside, but whatever weird thing bias you have against NA specifically needs to be put down with your ego. There is something weird that happens to some EU players when they come over in thinking they are overall so much better than the NA players, but then you find out the hard way that the skill gap isn't as big as you think it is and you can't get away with mediocrity. I think you can EARN the spot back. You are great enough to be able to.
Allorim- The only thing I really have to say to about Allorim is that I was for some reason expecting you to pull out a Yorick into the Wukong pick since it's a solid matchup for Yorick, but I understand that it pigeon holes the team into a split push team comp that can be risky in the current roam everywhere you can meta. Still at this point picks like Urgot and malph have been great for the team, and he has shown up to play. I really hope this is something that can be sustained by you overall.
Potluck- Alright I'm saying it. You have been better than Xmithie this split. I'm a huge Xmithie fan boy. Even when he was on team Vulcan I was a fan. I think this is his worst split ever. Even worse than his last split on CLG and you deserve a shot.
Xmithie- I don't think I have ever watched Xmithie be the worst player on a team before, but here we are in 2020. New experiences for everyone all around. Everyone has slumps and since you are a multiple time champion I EXPECT you to pick yourself up. The only argument I have for keeping this guy as the starter is that the synergy with Hakuho is pretty great. Especially because both of you are cerebral players. However sometimes in league you need to be cerebral and other times you have to be able to show you can just press buttons better. It's been a while since I have felt you can press buttons better than the opponent.
Eika- I don't want to come across as a bully. I just don't feel you are worth the import slot. You are a good player, just not one for this league right now. With someone like Ryoma, you see those moments where he slides in with Azir and 1v3s with a nice shuffle to bring the game back from the brink and it let's you know there is potential in the guy. Or in his best of series in playoffs last split you see he learned from getting smacked around. When I think of you Eika I think back to game 1 of the split where you have Galio and you are taunting over the wall around the 16 minute mark for at best a terrible looking taunt, then I realize you are trying flash taunt. They took that out of the game man... I just don't see those same sparks of brilliance from you. Sorry.
Insanity- Alright everything I said about Eika is opposite here. The fact that you weren't at least given a shot earlier is a blunder and it makes sense why the old GM was fired for not letting you start after game 2 of the split. I really hope that the overall poor standings of the split don't deter your growth, cause kid you got the moves.
Gate/Altec- While losses haven't been on this bot lane, what I feel seperates them from the duo of Hakuho/Apollo is that when given a winning match up they seem to flounder it. I do feel as if Gate is the worse half of this duo just due to how much he seems to get caught out, but it definitely doesn't feel like Altec does a lot in regards of carrying either. Sometimes I watch and it's as if Altec is playing for his stats whereas Gate is playing for the win, but making the wrong plays to do it. Just from my eye test.
Apollo/Hakuho- About what I expected. That is both a good thing and a bad thing. At this point I feel like these guys are the measuring stick for how good a bot lane should be at minimum to be in the LCS. You are the height requirement for this kiddie ride we call LCS. If you aren't at least as good as this duo, then you aren't good enough to be here. Again, both a compliment and an insult.
100T - Although I understand shake ups had to happen, I'm personally on the side of Stunt in his good bye message. It is a really big shame that he won't be able to prove that they can rally later in the season again like they did last split. I understand that changes had to happen, but who is to say that the group with Meteos and Stunt couldn't do it again. It is now one of my great what if scenarios as well.
Ssumday- Right now still a top 3 top laner in this league. Tanks? Got the team. Bruisers? Yeah sure. Carries? Yeah he can do that. I think one thing that urks a lot of fans is the lack of hard carries put in Ssumdays hands, but he is a great tank player as well and for a lot of the scenarios it isn't ideal to have a top lane carry oriented pick for this team. They have been on the side of scaling for as a team for a bit now and players like Cody need multiple big boys in front of them to be the most effective. He just does his best and respects all, but fears none.
Meteos- Let's ignore the twitter debacle and really focus on just the gameplay and if Meteos as a player can look at those Olaf VODS and say "yeah I was right to make that decision" with a straight face, then he deserves the bench. Something that I feel maybe him and a few other old guard players are actually not good at is criticism. They are always looking to justify why the play or decision they made was actually the correct one and others clearly don't know what they are talking about. The results however have shown that maybe he isn't always right. Maybe there are things he seems to be lacking or missing. It's okay to be wrong as long as you grow, but there seems to be a lack of growing this split. If he gets another chance in this season to start I hope he is ready to prove everyone wrong.
Contractz/Poome- It wouldn't be fair to do an assessment based off what we have seen so far, so I'll give it until the end of the split.
Ryoma- As stated above in Eika, I fully understand why any team not just 100T would have wanted Ryoma as a starter. Clearly he is consistent yet, but I believe that he can be. Every once in a while Ryoma will have a play that makes me go " Oh that was really nice" or "That's really clutch" I just wish he weren't making so many of those plays from behind.
Cody Sun- Still Lite Doublelift. Both a compliment and an insult. It's sad because he does not win lane as much as DL so I kind of feel like I'm insulting DL by calling Cody a poor mans version of him. I really want to see Cody start separating this label on himself because it will follow him and begin to haunt him forever if he doesn't.
Stunt- shrugs You tried your best. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough. Part of me thinks you were able to rally so easily last split because you knew your spot was guaranteed that split no matter how you played. It alleviated that pressure that you always had on you from previous teams and really allowed growth. Unfortunately a slow start this split and not being able to pick up where you left off came and bit you in the ass. Hopefully in the next team you join there is a chance for you to succeed. Good luck man.
Golden Guardians- Clear upgrades and there is clearly a diamond in the rough here. Although I'm surprised at not keeping Golden glue for growth purposes. I really was hoping you would be one of the teams to keep the entire roster the same as last split. That way you get an actual full measure of your team. Ousting Goldenglue wasn't the bad, but it's kind of the same situation as Stunt where you really don't know if the team could have grown more from having a stable roster.
Hauntzer- Every once in a while Haunzter makes some either really poor decisions or has really poor communication with his jungler. I'm not sure which one it is exactly. The TSM game sticks out to me as one of those times. Why didn't he ask Closer to come and help push the wave in with him when he was by Krugs?! Sometimes his wave management and trade timings are questionable and I'm so confused as to whether he is good or bad because sometimes it's immaculate. Another thing that's super filthy(in a good way) is how he uses vision at times and I wet myself from the big brain moments he can have. They are just ruined by him wearing his headband too tight in some games. Top half top laner, but I don't see Hauntzer pushing this team into the top 4 any time soon.
Closer- This may sound like I'm insulting Closer here, but I think GG was under appreciated by him. There were a lot of small things that were done by him that Damonte does not do in terms of vision and positioning that really made Closer look good. Of course no one will care to look back now, but there were plenty of times last split where GG would die for Closer to clean things up and get the highlight, but that isn't happening as much this time around. Although I admit laning wise Damonte is an upgrade there is something to be said about the soft skills bringing up players as well on a team. Still a good jungler and worth the import slot, but I'm going to need a bit more in terms of carry performances here since overall this split has been underwhelming.
Damonte- Definitely deserved a starting spot, too bad it's a rough start. I feel like there are too many times I have seen Damonte late to the play when going for a roam. Even when on something that should have priority. Or times when I see that him lose a trade and can't be as aggressive when heading towards objective fights since he made too many mistakes in trades. I need this to be cleaned up so that way the objective fights can actually start on even footing. Too many times this split I'm seeing Damonte walk to the dragon/baron with half health because of a bad trade he took right before it. The prime example of this is against TL where he eats a Jensen shockwave right before drag spawn. The team can't commit to a fight because of how low he is. Overall the lane was played well, but getting shoved out before objectives over and over was not fun to watch.
FBI/Huhi- The weakest link of this team is here. There are some points where I see FBI and I'm thinking this guy is Uzi in secret. Then I see him just randomly misposition and I'm thinking "ThIs GuY iS uZi!" However a lot of that flies under the radar because Huhi has far more obvious mistakes. It's clear that Huhi is watching VODS on CoreJJ because it feels like he is lite version. From the way he positions himself to the timings he has for going for vision it all reminds me of Core. It's a good place to start for learning, except there he is still getting caught in crucial moments unlike Core. I think if we give Huhi enough time he will be amazing, but I don't know if GG will give him enough time since FBI seems to be ready right now in comparison.
CLG - Already doing better than last split which is a great start. The only place for you guys to go in comparison to last split is up so I'm glad the fruits of your labor is starting to show. There are still major gaps that need to be filled.
Ruin- I miss the ruin that played a different champion pretty much every game and showed he is skilled enough to do so. There is just something so deadly about a top laner with a vast champion pool that can reach in and grab a niche pick that his team needs or really abuse red side in some creative way. I was hoping to see a reurn of that version of Ruin. The top lane meta is far more open than people think and I'm just surprised in how underutilized his versatility is right now. If there is one improvement on this team I would want this more than anything.
Wiggly- Alright I'm going to be honest. I didn't expect Wiggly to be good this split. I thought he would be replaced, especially after the perfect game for the season opener. However I have been pleasantly surprised. Synergy with Pob has not been bad at all pathing has been solid. Just a good middle of the pack jungler. I'm not expecting a hard carry performance out of Wiggly, but I have come to see him as a reliable jungler who knows what his role is in each game/team comp he is placed in. If he could fit a couple more hard carry performances in that would be really great to make the team more dynamic
Pobelter- Funny how this guy couldn't find a team at the beginning of last split. Still the paragon of a great LCS mid. Whereas Hakuho/Apollo are the bar for LCS play I think of Pob as the bar for international play. You have to be at minimum as good as Pobelter to compete on the international stage. At least by NA standards. Still showing that the boomers still got it. Every once in a while a poor decision is made, but nothing that can't be smoothed out.
Stixxay/Smoothie- Look which bot lane decided to remember things they were good at. Glad to see a bounce back to more stable form after the terrible showing from both of these guys last split. Smoothie has really started playing around vision well again and Stixxay has finally been positioning properly to take advantage of the opportunities handed to him. I actually would love to see a bit more roaming out of Smoothie. Lately it seems he is super attached at the hip to the lane, wheras when I think of the best of smoothie it is his random roams towards even the top side that I remember most. He seems to be on the same page with Wiggly more this split which has helped tremendously.
FlyQuest- The addition of Solo has definitely made this team better than the spring split version. Mash is still up in the air if he improves the team overall, but the team is definitely in position to finish second again this split. Most of the mistakes on this team are very few and far between.
Solo- Staying untiltable. The only criticism that has ever really been part of Solo from his career is how he can tilt and not be very good to work with when things are going poorly. I don't think his play is really anything that needs to be worried about. However I fully expect people to start taking away Sett from him at some point. Just been ridiculous on that champ both in and out of laning phase. It's like the champ was made for him in a way.
Santorin- I used to be one of the harshest critics of Santorin. I always felt that he was never really the carry his team needed to be, but for the past few splits he has really been putting any haters down. Me included. The little invisible things like simply providing pressure and vision for Solo in top side so he doesn't just get ganked are just huge over sights into what he is able to provide. Most of the mistakes that I see stem from set up around pits during the mid-late game, but that is a team wide issue and not simply a Santorin thing. I imagine if this team is losing it is mostly going to be around the pit area for either drag or baron.
PowerofEvil- If C9 did not exist he would be my ballot for MVP. He is just too valuable to what this team needs and has made adjustments in his play to accommodate different styles. The team lives and dies by how he and Santorin are playing.
Wildturtle/Mash/Ignar= WT's willingness to play weakside should not be seen as a weakness, what should be seen as a weakness is giving him a winning match up and he doesn't push the advantage. That is a weakness and that is why I can understand why the team felt the need to step back from him a bit. Mash has been solid, but I don't think he has done anything that WT isn't capable of or hasn't shown he is capable of. Ignar has been great and is a top 3 support in the league most likely the 3rd best and ends up second best if CoreJJ is having an off day.
Evil Geniuses- This is going to be a banger of a review #Live Evil.
Kumo- If it wasn't for the last two games where he got demolished I would have been okay saying Kumo is the 4th best top laner in the league. I really liked the Volibear pick in Kumos hands, but teams seemed to have taken it away. I also really would like to see Kumo on a bit more Poppy. It just seems to work so well for him when he is on it and I don't know why EG seems to shy away from picking it for him when he is so good at executing on this champ. If he is able to force Poppy bans then mission accomplished. Pick it for him more often is all I'm asking for.( of course when it is more appropriate to do so)
Svenskeren- #Live Evil. Svenskeren has been playing really well with Jizuke despite a couple int games here and there for him. I don't know what happened to picks like Xin disappearing for him, but definitely would like to see him on stuff like that again so he can take charge of some games. I appreciate that he has been able to maintain some form of agency despite the focus of the team not being around him at all. #Live Evil
Jizuke- Definition of a coin flip player right here. You either get the guy who is able to TF ultimate into the perfect spot every time and the pull Misaya level bait and perfect game a solid team. Or you get the guy who is so tilted and ineffective he doesn't even want the extra damage that Kogmaw passive does because it will be useless. I wish I could tell him to change, but part of what makes him bad is also what makes him so great as well. You want a random play that just basically ends the game? This guy will do it. Just heads or tails as to whether it results in a win or not.
Bang/Zeyzal- I'm a fan of this bot lane. I think Zeyzal is the weaker link in this duo, but not by a huge margin or the extent he is holding Bang back like he was held back in 100T. (Sorry Aphro). It's just the only bastion of consistency on this team of what feels like wild cards. When the ball has been passed to them to carry though they seem to handle it so easily.
Team Liquid- The best top 3 team in the league right now. I'm not sure whether I should praise Jensen and CoreJJ for keeping this team together and squeaking out wins, but that's exactly what they both have been doing. Although it feels bad and looks bad. The wins column is adding up pretty nicely. Say what you want about their draft choices or the sloppy execution, but good teams find ways to win and despite what people may say this is a good team and likely is heading to worlds if they clean up the early game.
Impact- There is a huge misconception that Impact is a tank player and I need it to stop. He is not a tank player. He is an independent type of player who knows when and how to group with his team at the right time so he can ahem have an impact on the game. The picks he is being given in Mordekaiser, Jayce, and Kennan are all proof of that. These are all champs that are able to handle themselves in isolation/side lanes and have great flanks or disrupt the team fight in different ways. He has been great this split and is highly undervalued in what he brings to this team.
Broxah- The issue people have in how ugly TLs wins are because they have had to smite fight so often for their objectives lately. On top of that we are not seeing Broxah on picks like Elise or Lee Sin a whole lot either and those type of picks really do make him shine as compared to Trundle with his sick pillar play. Overall what we WANT to see out of him isn't what is needed out of him. He is doing exactly what his team needs and that is to support his solo laners as much as possible so that they can carry the games. If he is going to be playing this supportive style he plays a mean Ivern if I remember correctly.
Jensen- I have a love hate relationship when it comes to Jensen. He is really good, but doesn't always back it up in the way we want him to. He still does Jensen things where he is almost always up in [email protected] by 11. It's just that TL early game as a team has been so ugly to watch that we miss the greatness of Jensen and his individual skill. My gripe with Jensen isn't individual talent. It is elevating the people around him to another level and that's where I see his contemporaries(Nisqy, PoE, Bjerg) simply be better at it than him. I'm of course not behind the scenes so I'm not sure what actually goes on behind the scenes, but that's just my perception.
CoreJJ/Tactical- It's fair to say that Tactical slots into this team nicely, but it helps having one of the best support players in the world on your side while you come into your own. CoreJJ actually shifted the entire support meta when he showed you can start shrines with Bard and give your mid laner two shrines to start the game. In case people forget the shrines also give move speed so good luck out sustaining and landing hits during any trades early. After he did that almost every single support in NA has copied it. So yes he is still one of the best supports in the league.
TSM - This is a good team. Not C9 levels of good, but still a good team. They have integrated Spica so seamlessly into the line up that I'm actually sad there was a split of mediocre Dardoch instead of giving the kid a chance earlier. Bjerg also seems to be on a mission to prove he is still the best as well. This team went from not having an existing early game to being one of the best early game teams in the league. The biggest flaw they have is that every once in a while they make a mistake that throws their lead away. This can't happen on the international level, but I'm all for you guys making as many mistakes now so you can patch it up as time passes.
Brokenblade- Synergy with Spica has been nothing short of near excellent. Stats say he is the best top laner in the league right now, but until C9 falls I have to leave it in Licorices hands. Otherwise firmly the second best and it shuffles between Licorice, Ssumday and Impact for this top spot here right now. For improvement the only thing I think of is getting caught before objectives like drag. That's about one of the only noticeable flaws I see from my end. Team fighting and knowing when to sacrifice himself have been great. Almost no death with BB goes without meaning in someway or he simply won't die and reads ganks pretty well. I'm just hoping he gets better at protecting himself in the mid game lane swap. That tends to be the only time he really gets caught out for mid game mistakes.
Spica- Look at this spicy kid here. What I'm most impressed by more than the raw mechanics is the ability to manipulate where he is in vision and being in the right place at the right time so often. Once or twice is luck, but when a player is at the right place so often it is just a skill that they have in reading the map and flow of the game. Along with the mechanics and the proper aggression shown the only improvements are things that come with time and experience in decision making, but that is what Bjerg is there for and boy has he lived up to that for the guys this split.
Bjergsen- If C9 didn't exist Bjerg would be second in MVP voting behind PoE. Part of the reason I have PoE ahead is because somehow he has come up just a tiny bit more clutch than Bjerg the last few times they have matched up. There is just something so great about watching a great player do their thing and I definitely feel like that is what we are witnessing from Bjerg. Both the eye test and stats are showing he is no less than top three as a mid laner and if you still think he is the problem then God have mercy on your soul.
Doublelift/Biofrost- You guys are good, but have had some questionable games along with some really hard pop off games as well. I'm excited to see if you they have a way to break C9's bot lane the way that CoreJJ broke down you guys at the beginning of the split.
TLDR I watch too much league of legends. I'll do one for LEC tomorrow.
